From the first moment you meet Calista you can see that she’s not only a lady with great style but also great determination.

Calista is the creative talent behind Giggling Gertie accessories.

“I was always crafty,” she says. “I started sewing when I was 12 and have never looked back.

“I always loved fabrics and bought lots of different ones until I had a big collection that makes my accessories very tactile and unique.”

Calista completed a Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology at the Tasmanian Polytechnic in 2010. That was where she took the step of putting together a comprehensive business plan that helped her decide to buy supplies in bulk to ensure she has enough stock rather than to continue buying in small quantities and struggle to keep up with growing demand.

Calista’s Micro-Business Loan helped her to purchase a digital camera so she can promote her products on the Web and to help with promotion generally. She also has an industrial sewing machine which makes the whole process much easier.

“Now that I’ve set it up as a real business, instead of just something I pursued in my free time, I have the freedom to make as many products as I like so I can meet demand and keep my stockists happy.

“And I’m really enjoying the creativity.”

Giggling Gertie is currently stocked by over 10 boutiques locally and interstate. Calista is also a regular stall holder at many artists’ markets in Tasmania.
